City of Ice - Matters

City of Ice Matters!

Last week, we took a virtual field trip to the City of Ice in China. It is an amazing creation made up of ice from a local river. We used this opportunity to also discuss matter and the three states - solid, liquid and gas. Through our video, we share information on the City of Ice and matter.

Math Homework:

This week, I sent home math homework.  Every student in our class can write numbers from 0 – 100 with no problems.  We hope to master numbers from 0 – 120 soon.  Now we want to extend that knowledge to help them decompose and manipulate those numbers by identifying numbers when only part of the chart is exposed and help them better have a better understanding of numbers.  This can be a very challenging skill to master and any extra help at home can be beneficial.

Pencils

We are experiencing a pencil shortage in our class.  If possible, please send in a pack.  Many thanks!

Star Student

A star student schedule was sent home today.  Your child will be making an iMovie to share with the class on his or her special day.  At your convenience, could you share 5-6 photos by emailing them to me?  It would be best if you could send them at least 1 week before your child’s star student day.  They will need a week to work on their presentation.  If you cannot email, please send them in and I will scan them.  I will send you a copy of the final iMovie.

Valentine’s Day!

Please send in an empty cereal box so that we may decorate.  We need a big box for our class valentines!  Also, if you are able to send in a topping for our ice cream sundae treat.  Please let me know!

Monday Update!

Just a few updates:
Test Email
Thank you for all of the test replies! The district IT department asked me to test this feature in hopes of rolling it out district wide. It was a success! Thank you for your help!
Valentines Day!
We will be having a Valentine's Day party on Friday, February 14 the last hour of class. Student's will be doing a valentine swap. It is not required that your child bring valentines, but if he/she does choose to bring them, he/she must bring a valentine for every student.
The first 20 minutes of our party will be devoted to passing out and reading the valentines. The students love this activity! The 2nd half of the party will be an ice cream sundae building party. Would anyone be able to send in bowls, spoons or toppings? I will send home more info and names on Thursday!

This Week's Homework!

Today the students were introduced to Sum Dog, an online math gaming world that is aligned with our Common Core Curriculum.  I can manage their profiles and levels to give them more challenging problems or adjust as needed.

The students should have brought home their login information.  If they need it, you can email me.

You may notice that I will be making adjustments to some student's homework bundle to better fit their needs.  I will contact you if I am making changes.

Happy New Year!

We are back in action!  I hope you all had a fantastic Christmas and New Years celebration!  With the new year, I have set some goals for our class.  Over the next 5 months, we will work very hard on our reading and math skills.

Here are just a few reminders and updates:

1.  The January volunteer calendar has been posted.  If you would like to volunteer, please let me know.  We LOVE volunteers!

2.  Homework is due on Friday unless you contact me

3.  In addition to weekly spelling and comprehension tests, your students will also be tested on sight words and reading fluency.  As a reminder, your child is expected to read 53 words correct per minute by May.

4.  This week's spelling list has been published.  We are working on er, ir, and ur.  Since there is not a rule to follow when using the r controlled spellings, we will have a set word list.
