Room 11 News Jr! News From Around the School!

Welcome to our next edition of Room 11 News Jr!  This week's broadcast is all about news from around our school.  For this edition, we partnered with our 5th grade buddies from Mrs. Wright's class.

Each newscast, including story development and videoing were completed by the student teams.  The newscast teams were responsible for researching, storyboarding, interviewing, and videoing their assignment.  Each week, we will continue to refine all skills.  The students are truely shining and leading the way.  The teacher’s role is to support the teams.

This week's topics include:  5th grade PACE project, Book Recommendations, Sports Talk, Martin Luther King Day, Science Talk - Penguins, Blizzards, Bully Awareness, Health Report - Germ Spread.

Technology Night - Student Volunteers

Technology Night - January 25

I am looking for 10 students to help staff our iPad demonstration station.  The purpose of the iPad demonstration station is to show our Discovery parents how the iPads are being used at our school.  I feel that it would be more beneficial to have the students demonstrate the iPads.  Watching the students in action is much more interesting!  I will be at the station the entire night helping with questions.  Three other teachers on our school technology committee will be asking the same request of their students.  We hope to show what grades 1 - 5 can do with the iPads.

I realize that there are many fun activities planned for the night so I am setting up 15 minute shifts.  The students will demonstrate how to publish stories, use myOn and many of our favorite educational apps. Please let me know if your child would like to volunteer.  Below are the time slots.  Thanks for your support!

As part of our 21st Century grant, we are fortunate to have a subscription to Channel One New Jr.  We watch a 5 minute CBS sponsored news cast for young students most mornings.  Now it is our turn to produce our own newscast.  We will spend time on Fridays planning, videoing and producing our own mini newscast.  The students will rotate jobs that include - reporters, videographers, news researchers, student participants and producers.

Happy New Year!!

Happy New Year!!  The students and I had a great day back at school!

Just a couple of updates:

1.  No spelling test or regular homework this week.  Instead the homework will focus on family traditions.  This will be due on Monday.  The students will present to our class.
We are continuing our  unit on Family: Past & Present. During this unit we have discussed who the people in our family are, things we can do as families, and that families work and care for each other. This week we will be discussing what makes our families special. Chances are you have some special traditions and family habits that make your family unique. As an assignment, I am asking your child to bring back a “family story” or tradition that is special for their family.  If possible, please help your child with one of the activities below, having them draw their story or tradition on the paper coming home. When they bring it back to school, they will retell their story to the class, from the picture they drew.

Find a family recipe.

Think about these questions:
Where did the recipe come from?
Does everyone in the family enjoy it?
How often is it served?
Who is in charge of preparing it?
Has anything funny ever happened as it was being made?

Ask a parent or grandparent to tell you a story about when you were younger.

Describe a family tradition- something your family does each year to celebrate a holiday or special occasion.

2.  The Roaring Reader program is back and will be sent home by Friday.  This is an opportunity for students to earn a day pass to Roaring Springs by reading.
3.  The Volunteer calendar will be updated by Friday at 3:45.  I will be attempting to post the calendar through March.
Again, Happy New Year!!
Melissa :)
